Magistrates Court

What are the sentencing powers of the Magistrates?

The Magistrates' Courts can impose a wide range of sentences. They can give you a conditional discharge, a fine up to £5000, a community order, a suspended sentence of imprisonment or a prison sentence up to six months. This increases to 12 months if you are charged with two either way offences. Magistrates also have the power to disqualify you from driving or add points to your driving licence. They can consider various civil orders which accompany a sentence such as an Anti Social Behaviour Order, a restraining order, a football banning order or a sexual offences prevention order.
